First Responder

The First Responder course is designed to teach rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor skills they need to recognize emergencies at the worksite and give first aid. This course meets all requirements for OSHA and Texas Teacher Association guidelines. The student will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of minor emergencies and treatment for poisoning, allergic reactions, bone injuries, and seizures, as well as the use of PPE (personal protective equipment) to protect against bloodborne pathogens. Included will be Airway Management training, for opening the airway and oxygen delivery devices, and Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) training, which focuses on trauma assessment and treatment and is targeted at first responders and hospital staff that deal with trauma patients. Participants will be given didactic knowledge and hands on experience with, spinal immobilization equipment and extrication devices. In addition to learning how to move patients, rescuers will learn basic patient assessment skills and how to obtain vital signs. A patient assessment is the culmination of the physical signs and the symptoms as described by the victim. The acronym SAMPLE (signs/symptoms, allergies, medications, pertinent medical history, last oral intake, events leading up to the incident) is used to evaluate the victim and plan a course of action. Another vital part of the patient assessment is taking the victims vital signs. The rescuer will be trained on how to obtain the victims blood pressure, pulse rate and respiration rate.

Upon completion of this course the rescuer will be able to describe how to care for sudden illnesses, wounds, burns, bone and muscle injuries, and obtain vital patient information.

At the conclusion of the course the student should be able to:
Describe the importance of scene safety
Describe moving an ill or injured victim
Recognize the signs and symptoms related to major emergencies
Demonstrate how to perform patient assessment, obtain S.A.M.P.L.E. and vital signs
	PPE and bloodborne pathogens
Demonstrate how to immobilize injuries to bones, joints or muscles
	Shock evaluation and management
	Airway Management
	Scene Safety for Rescuers
Moving ill or injured victim & how to do so with out further damage
Assessing a victim for injuries or sudden idleness
Signs and Symptoms associated with injuries and sudden illnesses
When to activate the EMS for injuries and sudden illnesses
Demonstrate how to perform assessment for injuries and ill victims
Demonstrate how to control bleeding and to bandage wounds
Demonstrate how to immobilize injuries to bones, joints or muscles
	C-spine immobilize patients
	Use of traction splints
	What are Boodborne Pathogens
Airway anatomy and oxygen delivery devices
In the event of a catastrophe, having an established mass casualty incident (MCI) plan in place will provide an organized approach to assessing, rescuing, and treating individuals quickly and in the order of severity. A good method to use is S.T.A.R.T. The Simple Triage And Rapid Treatment (START) system was developed to allow first responders to triage multiple victims in 30 seconds or less, based on three primary observations: Respiration, Perfusion, and Mental Status (RPM). The START system is designed to assist rescuers to find the most seriously injured patients. As more rescue personnel arrive on the scene, the patients will be re-triaged for further evaluation, treatment, stabilization, and transportation. This system allows first responders to open blocked airways and stop severe bleeding quickly.

At the end of this course the student should be able to implement the START system.
