The first aid course is designed to teach rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor
skills they need to recognize emergencies at the worksite and give first aid.
This course meets all requirements for OSHA and Texas Teacher Association
guidelines. The student will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of minor emergencies
and treatment for poisoning, allergic reactions, bone injuries, seizures, and foreign body
obstruction. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to describe how to
provide CPR, care for sudden illnesses, wounds, burns, bone and muscle injuries.
Class duration: 4hrs
Course Objectives:
Describe the importance of scene safety
Demonstrate proper technique for moving an ill or injured victim
Recognize the signs and symptoms related to major emergencies
Demonstrate how to perform patient assessment
Demonstrate how to immobilize injuries to bones, joints or muscles
Relief of foreign body obstruction, conscious and unconscious
Scene safety for rescuers
Moving ill or injured victim without causing further damage
Assessing a victim for injuries or sudden illness
Signs and symptoms associated with injuries and sudden illnesses
When to activate EMS for injuries and sudden illnesses
Demonstrate how to perform assessment for injuries and ill victims
Demonstrate how to control bleeding and to bandage wounds
Demonstrate how to immobilize injuries to bones, joints or muscles
First Aid Instructor
Requirements for becoming a Heartsaver First Aid Instructor:
Be a current AHA BLS Instructor or Heartsaver Instructor
Must meet one of the following requirements:
Be a healthcare professional (physician, nurse, EMS technician, dentist, athletic trainer, etc.).
Be a recognized FACTS or American Red Cross First Aid Instructor.
Have completed the AHA Heartsaver First Aid provider course including the environmental section.
Attend a First Aid Instructor Course orientation conducted by an Instructor-Trainer who also holds First Aid Instructor recognition.
AHA instructors are not automatically qualified (grand-fathered) to teach First Aid.
