Basic Life Support Instructor


This course provides the training for individuals to become certified as instructors for American Heart Association Basic Life Support Courses, including HeartSaver, HeartSaver AED, HeartSaver Infant and Child (currently called Pediatric Basic Life Support) CPR for Family and Friends, Healthcare Provider and HeartSaver First Aid. The instructional materials and information provided at these courses meets the American Heart Association requirements for "Guidelines 2005 for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care." Upon successful completion of a BLS Instructor Course, the Instructor candidate must be monitored (within 90 days of course completion) while teaching a course prior to receiving 2-year certification as an American Heart Association BLS Instructor.

The AHA recommends that Instructors be at least 16 years of age.

Course duration: 16 hours (2 day course)

Prerequisites:

All prospective participants in the Instructor Course must have a current Healthcare Provider CPR card.

A completed Instructor Candidate Application must be provided to the Course Director for approval before the Instructor Course.

Obtain and Review the First Aid Instructor's Manual prior to class.

Course Completion:

Candidates must demonstrate satisfactory performance of lectures, scenarios, interactive case presentations, skills presentations, proper use of video-based learning and skills in student testing, assessment, and remediation.

Candidates must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of course organization; course content, including appropriate BLS skills; and Instructor responsibilities; as well as the AHA guidelines for the specific discipline.

BLS Instructor candidates must achieve a score of 84% or higher on the BLS Instructor Course written examination.

Basic Life Support Renewal Instructor Course

This course is for current American Heart Association BLS Instructors. Instructors must have taken a Heartsaver AED Provider Course to be eligible for enrollment in the BLS Instructor update. The instructional materials and information provided at these courses meets the American Heart Association requirements for "Guidelines 2005 for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care." Upon successful completion of an "Instructor Update" course, the Instructor will be credentialed to teach the material in the new Guidelines 2005 curricula.
